Hotel Selfoss
We really liked Selfoss hotel even though we spent only one night there during our guided tour of the Golden Circle . The hotel is nicely decorated and offers big rooms with a view. Our room had a very big window facing the river, which in winter was partially covered by ice. The enjoyable view, quiet location and comfy bed will allow you to recover after a day of intense exploring.
We didnโt have time to try the spa or dine at the local restaurant as we opted to have dinner at a nearby restaurant. However, the hotel’s buffet breakfast is enjoyable with a selection of eggs, cheese, salami and fruit, coffee and juice. Not the best buffet breakfast you will ever have but it is more than enough for an explorer needs. Indeed, we started feeling hungry only in the mid afternoon when we had some snacks from the petrol station.
As any hotel in Iceland, also Selfoss Hotel provides customers with the northern lights alert. Unfortunately, the sky was cloudy while we were there so we didnโt see it.
Tryggvaskali Restaurant – Sellfoss
We were exhausted from the long day spent exploring the Golden Circle and we were looking for a cosy restaurant where we could enjoy a good meal before going to bed. We had few options available at walking distance from the hotel where we stayed but Tryggvaskali restaurant caught our interest from the very beginning. Not only was highly rated on Google, but it also looked nice from outside, being an independent house in perfect Icelandic style.
The interior was nicely decorated with old stuff, from photos and books passing to old instruments and devices. It was very cosy, and we felt immediately at home. The staff was polite and friendly, and the food came quickly enough to satisfy our hunger.
We ordered some lobster soup and a sophisticated main course consisting of grilled cod fish accompanied by veggies, yolk cream and some spicy salami. Even though it may sound awkward, the combination was actually a great success for our taste butts.
We loved the soup too, which we ate with homemade warm bread and butter. I still dream about that loaf of bread dipped in the soup. The restaurant is a bit pricey if we consider that Sellfoss is not really a big city. Indeed, we paid slightly more than the average price we paid in Reykjavik. That’s maybe why Google categorizes it as โfine diningโ.
The only odd thing was the background music with old Italian classics, which were not expected in an Icelandic restaurant. Maybe the restaurant is also known for its Italian dishes as an Icelandic family enjoyed some pasta ordered from a separate menu.
